Dominic Cerrato
named editor

Deacon Dominic Cerrato has been named editor of Deacon Digest magazine, a publication of Our Sunday Visitor serving permanent deacons and their families. The announcement was made April 19 by Gretchen R. Crowe, editor-in-chief of Our Sunday Visitor.

"Deacon Dominic is the ideal person to be editor of Deacon Digest as it seeks to support, serve, form and inform permanent deacons in the United States and around the world," Crowe said. "His understanding of the role of the deacon, his theological background and his pastoral heart for the diaconate make Deacon Dominic the perfect fit to direct the content of Deacon Digest." Our Sunday Visitor recently hosted a free webinar entitled "Calling All Deacons: Celebrating 50 Years of the Diaconate in the USA" to mark the upcoming anniversary of the restoration of the permanent diaconate in the Church.

The webinar was hosted by radio host and author (and a deacon's wife) Teresa Tomeo, as well as Deacon Thomas Dubois, executive director of the National Association of Diaconate Directors, and Gretchen R. Crowe, editor-in-chief of OSV periodicals, including Deacon Digest. To listen to their hourlong discussion about the diaconate, click here to register.

The St. Louis Review (the official newspaper of the archdiocese) shares the heartwarming story of Steven and Liz Callen and their journey through the adoption process. Steven, who is more than halfway through his formation as a permanent deacon, hopes to share their experience of infertility and adoption and weave it into his ministry once he is ordained.

Deacon Arnaldo Santos of the Diocese of Camden writes in the Catholic Star Herald about how rooting his life in prayer has helped him find the balance he needs to serve his family and his faith. "How do I do all I do? I start and end my day in prayer, put on my many hats and an Armor of God which protects me each and every day as I face new challenges." Read Deacon Santos' inspirational reflection here.

This weekend, six men will be ordained as permanent deacons in the Diocese of New Ulm, Minnesota. Bruce Bot, Travis Welsh, Kenneth Noyes, Anthony Grack, Ryan Pope and Barry Reindl make up the diocese's second ordination class, joining a group of 12 men who were ordained in 2012.

Bishop Peter J. Jugis of the Diocese of Charlotte, North Carolina, ordained 15 men to the permanent diaconate on April 14. In his homily, Bishop Jugis told the class, "It is a challenging invitation from God you that have chosen to answer — to be a deacon, to integrate your married life, your family life, your career and your diaconal ministry. It can be done and it can be done very effectively, as your brother deacons can show you by the example of their lives."
