"Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation."

2 Timothy 2:15
Dear Deacon Nguyen,

If you consider yourself a follower of Jesus then you're a leader too!
The disciples were given a command to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations..." (Matthew 28:19) and were told that whoever believed in Jesus would do works greater than His! Our Lord came to teach and to send. The greatest leader known to mankind trained and then delegated His followers for the work ahead.

But there is a seeming incongruity to the leadership that Jesus speaks of. There is a fine line between potentially being more focused on the success of a ministry than on Christ, the great minister. It's a tricky business, this Christian servanthood. It's leading, but it's also following, deference to our Lord and the love He cultivates and lives.

True spiritual leadership is a humbling journey. It is an awesome responsibility not to be taken lightly. Finally, it is relational in the fullest sense of the word. St. Paul prays with, cries over the needs of and leaves a legacy greater than gold for his beloved church in Ephesus in his farewell speech to them as portrayed in the book of Acts.

Prayer for 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

O God, You have sent us a marvelous Group Leader in the person of Jesus, born of Mary and raised by Joseph and honed in his skills by the need to form the men and women who followed Him around. Like Jesus, we too find ourselves challenged to follow His Spirit and to be a leader to those commended to our care or responsibility. And so we ask for a dash of Your wisdom and love in our dealings with those close to us, so as to be open to their way of teaching us to grow up in the power of the Spirit of Jesus.

Amen.

~ Father John P. Martin, M.M.
Dinh, perhaps the most sobering aspect of Christian leadership is that it must operate from a place of truth. Study of God's Word is paramount when being released into the world in ministry. It is the fiber holding the appointed one together and gives discernment against false teachings. I leave you with the following stanza from the poem "I Followed Where My Master Led" by Rev. Richard L. Clifford, M.M., in A Maryknoll Book of Poetry (Orbis Books): "I listened to his every word. I watched his every act. And every prophesy I heard, will soon become a fact."

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.

Your weekly Journey of Faith reflection

"The LORD, your God, who goes before you, is the one who will fight for you, just as he acted with you before your very eyes in Egypt, as well as in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD, your God, carried you, as one carries his own child, all along your journey until you arrived at this place."

Deuteronomy 1:29-31
Dear Deacon Nguyen,

Happy Father's Day!
The call to participate in God's creating, engendering, protecting and fostering of life is an incredible gift that calls us beyond ourselves. I imagine that every father feels overwhelmed by the immensity of the task that he faces. But I also imagine that he experiences strong emotions of awe, wonder and joy.

Being a father or mother is about cultivating life and helping to create the future; it is about participating in God's ongoing love affair with all of creation. What a marvelous privilege!

Even as we accept this mission with the best of intentions, it is still possible to get stuck in ourselves. In either the role of spiritual, biological, adoptive or foster father, it is very easy to become self-referential, to get caught up in our own desires and needs, and to lose sight of the vocation of giving totally of ourselves to give life to another. Parents face this reality as they struggle to support and protect their children. Those of us without children face this reality when we are struck by how far short we fall in our call to reach out to and serve others.

Prayer for Father's Day

The world may be the only classroom most children have; adults, their only textbook. And what they see and hear and learn along the way will shape their thoughts, color their words and season their actions. Each unselfish act of kindness, justice and compassion echoes the teachings of Christ. Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations, you who have learned from childhood what "Our Father" means.

Amen.

~ Father Joseph R. Veneroso, M.M.
Dinh, we are all called to foster life, to join God in fathering and creating the future. As we celebrate and meditate on the life-giving and protective role that we are all called to, let us thank God for this privilege and commit ourselves to cultivating and protecting all life.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.

CAC BAI DOC GIA GOI TOI - HAPPY FATHER'S DAY PDF Print E-mail

Happy Father's Day / Feliz día del padre

Hi Phote-Dinh,

I would like to take a moment to wish all of the fathers in our congregation a happy Father's Day. A father has a most important role in the home.

A Christian father is the leader of the household, and has been tasked not only with raising his children, but also with passing on the truth of God's Word to the next generation. "Tell it to your children, and your children to their children, and their children to the next generation" (Joel 1:3).

Having a good, godly Father is a gift from God. Take the time this Father's Day to tell him how much he means to you.

Above all, remember that your Heavenly Father has loved and cared for you all of your life. He deserves honor not only on Father's Day but every day of the year.

To all of the fathers we say "Happy Father's Day!" May your wisdom come from the Lord and may you continue to seek His face daily.

Hola Phote-Dinh,

"For God so loved the world"

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God."

John 3:16-18
Dear Deacon Nguyen,

"For God so loved the world" just about sums it up.
John 3:16 is a homily unto itself about love. It is considered by some to be the greatest verse in the greatest chapter of the greatest book about the greatest love of the greatest person for the greatest number of people.

Our Heavenly Father sent us His only Son, who came to give us life and then gave up His.

Indescribable love.

While working in Huancané in the Altiplano of Peru I met Juan, one of the Aymara catechists. He was a lot older than I. We spoke of a priest from years before who was the first Maryknoller to work in his parish. Juan had many fond memories of this priest, but one in particular stood out. The Father was the first ever non-Aymara to greet him and—scandalous—even shake his hand! Juan felt that this Maryknoller was the first "important person" to treat him as a human being. What a great way for a missioner to be remembered by the people he served!

Prayer for the Most Holy Trinity

O God, how good it is to acknowledge You as Father and Son and Holy Spirit, as our Tradition so wisely exhorts us. So much so that we have internalized these manifestations of your infinite Godhead and say them so readily. Today's Gospel so clearly states the basis for our faith and our life in this world, that we are manifestations of the love that binds You as one. Don't mind me if I cannot explain this to anyone else, but do call me to task if I fail to respect those around me as different as they may be as manifestations of Your love too. In the name of Jesus and the Spirit that lives in us through them.

Amen.

~ Father John P. Martin, M.M.
Dinh, where is God's presence in your life? Each kindness we show, each hand we shake, each act of love reflects Christ within us. That Maryknoller left a legacy—simple though it was—but one which lived on in the catechist, who then paid it forward. How reassuring that we do not have to earn God's love—He gave it freely and in the form of a Savior—and that the key to salvation is belief. But then we must be inclusive with this great gift, because everyone is eligible to access the author and foundation of our faith.

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Raymond J. Finch, M.M.
